Every year in England, school children in Reception and Year 6 have their height and weight checked at school as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.
This is a national programme which is used to measure how many children are a healthy weight and to provide extra support to any families that would like this.
The NHS School Nursing Team measure a child’s height and weight. Children are measured fully clothed, except for their coats and shoes, in a private space away from other pupils. The team will follow the latest NHS hand hygiene, cleaning and safeguarding guidelines.
If a child’s measurements show that they could be underweight, overweight or very overweight, a child’s results will be sent to the parent/carer’s email or contact will be made by telephone. Parents/carers will be sent tips and advice around healthy eating and exercise including local activities that can be accessed. Parents/carers will not be contacted a child is growing as expected for their age, sex and height.
All this information is treated confidentially and held securely. No individual measurements will be given to school staff or other children.
