Looking after your baby’s teeth

Resource type: Article

You can start brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as they start coming through. Make tooth brushing part of your daily routine, using a baby toothbrush with a small smear of fluoride toothpaste.

Tooth brushing tips for babies:

  • Use a tiny smear of toothpaste for infants and toddlers under 3, and a pea-sized amount for ages 3 to 6.
  • Try to brush thoroughly as possible at least twice a day.
  • If your child resists, make it a game or brush together.
  • Sit your baby on your knee with their head against your chest for easier brushing.
  • Brush in small circles, encourage spitting out toothpaste, but no need to rinse with water.
  • Ensure the right amount of toothpaste is used and supervise until they can brush effectively, usually by age 7.
